What is Nagaprathishta?

Nagaprathishta is the ritual installation (pratishtha = establishment, installation) of a Naga or serpent deity typically in the form of a sculpted stone showing one or more serpents. This is a significant ceremony in the South Indian Vedic tradition, particularly associated with removal of Sarpa Dosha (serpent curse) and Naga Dosha (affliction from displeased serpent spirits).

According to Hindu scriptures, serpents (nagas) are powerful beings who protect family lineages, guard underground treasures, and hold significant cosmic power. When a snake is killed on one's property, killed by a family member's vehicle, or an anthill (naga residence) is disturbed, the family can attract Naga Dosha. This manifests as childlessness, skin diseases, recurring health issues, family disputes, and financial instability.

Sarpa Dosha can also be indicated in the horoscope when Rahu, Ketu, or Saturn afflict certain houses. The Nagaprathishta ceremony at Rameshwaram where Lord Shiva adorned with serpents presides is particularly powerful for resolving all serpent-related doshas.
