What is Rudrabhishek Puja?

Rudrabhishek literally means "abhishekam (ritual bathing) of Rudra" - one of Lord Shiva's most powerful forms. The puja involves pouring a sequence of sacred liquids over the Shivalinga - each with specific spiritual meaning - while the pandit chants the Sri Rudram and Chamakam, among the most ancient and potent Vedic hymns known.

The sequence of liquids used in the abhishekam includes: water from the sacred Agni Theertham, raw milk (for purity and peace), curd (for prosperity), honey (for eloquence and wisdom), ghee (for vitality and protection), coconut water (for fertility), panchamrit (a five-ingredient sacred mixture), rose water (for love and grace), and finally pure water again to conclude. Each liquid corresponds to a specific blessing.

Performing Rudrabhishek at Rameshwaram is especially significant because Lord Rama himself established the Ramanathaswamy Shivalinga here and performed the first abhishekam with Ganga water brought specifically for this purpose.
