What is Mundan Sanskar?
Mundan Sanskar, known in Sanskrit as Chudakarana, is the sacred ceremony of the first tonsure the ritual shaving of a child's hair for the first time. According to Hindu tradition, the hair a child is born with carries impressions and karma from their previous lives. Shaving this hair in a sacred place with Vedic mantras removes this prior-life karma and frees the child to live fully in their current life.
Chudakarana is the 7th of the 16 Shodasha Samskaras (sacred rites of passage) prescribed in the Grihyasutras and Dharmasastras.
